PROGRAM OF INTERACTIVE CULTURAL TECHNOLOGY
The Program for Interactive Cultural Technology (PICT) is a full-semester academic program to prepare students for careers as professionals in museums, cultural organizations, and exhibition design business.
In the spring semester of 2019, I participated in the Program for Interactive Culture Technology (PICT) through the Media Arts and Technology department at New Mexico Highlands University. The project called for an exhibit redesign for the Jemez Historic Site that shared the stories and history of the Jemez people. The goal was to create a modern and dynamic design experience from a static and dated exhibit from the 1970s.
The PICT team was able to create new color palettes, display exhibit panels, create a trail guide and activity book, floor-to-ceiling video projects of historic images and oral histories, two featured interactive touch-screen tablets that focus on historic artifacts, and an annual Jemez event called “Light Among the Ruins”; redesigned two bathrooms accenting the Jemez night sky and volcanic features from the Valles Caldera Wilderness Preserve, and installed an engraved wood floor that features a map of the historic site drawn by the Jemez tribal members.
Door Panels
Two door panels were designed about the topics of Valles Caldera and Jemez Nature, containing different facts on each one.
Volcanic Wall
The volcanic wall is an interactive feature that is included in one of the restrooms. I worked on this installation with another student, Ali Romero. We created the wall using foam board insulation, spray foam insulation, spray paint, acrylic paint, sanders, and LED light strips.
